At Filament & Form, we use a material called PLA (Polylactic Acid) for the majority of our products — a modern 3D printing filament made from renewable plant-based resources rather than traditional petroleum-based plastics.
In simple terms, many PLA materials begin life as crops such as corn, sugarcane, cassava, or other starch-rich plants. The starches are processed and fermented into lactic acid, which is then transformed into the material used in 3D printing.
So yes — one of the key ingredients used in many PLA filaments comes from corn-derived starch, which is one of the reasons PLA has become one of the most widely used materials in modern 3D printing.

PLA can be recycled, although recycling options vary depending on your local area and waste facilities. Some specialist recycling services and material recovery programmes are able to process PLA materials into new products.

Is PLA Biodegradable?
This is where things can get a little confusing.
PLA is often described as biodegradable or compostable because it comes from renewable plant-based materials. However, PLA generally requires specific industrial composting conditions involving controlled heat, moisture, and processing facilities to properly break down. It doesn't simply disappear if left in a garden or home compost bin.
